Confidentiality
Every client I've worked with has needed to know that what they tell me is confidential. Every code of ethics for therapists recognizes this. It is your right to have me keep all you tell me in confidence, with very few exceptions.
No information about you, including the fact that you are receiving therapy with me, will be given out to anyone without your permission, except in the cases below.
- When I have a good reason to believe that you or another person are at immediate risk of serious harm, I have a duty to try to prevent that harm.
- When I have reason to believe a child is experiencing abuse or neglect, I must by law report it to the Ministry of Children and Families.
- A Court can order me to disclose information obtained in therapy.
- As part of my ongoing professional education, I participate in case consultations with other therapists. I may discuss your case anonymously in these consultations.
In every exception listed, I reveal only the information required to meet the situation, and no more.
Whenever possible, I let my client know what I am doing and try to find a way for them to participate constructively.
